Whooping cough

Whooping cough is a respiratory infection caused by a certain bacterium. It is highly contagious and commonly affects young children and infants. It can be prevented by giving the pertussis vaccine that provides immunization against the infectious disease. This vaccine is administered for other diseases like tetanus and diphtheria. The immunity gained with this vaccine wears off after a few years and whooping cough may infect teenagers and adults as well. Bordetella pertussis is the bacterium that causes whooping cough. This bacterium was isolated in 1906. Symptoms of this disease are sneezing, occasional cough, mild fever, and a runny nose.
